Neighborhood Spotlight Awards

About the Neighborhood Spotlight Awards

The Baltimore Community Foundation (BCF) established the Neighborhood Spotlight Awards in 2022 to honor the unsung heroes who make Baltimore stronger, safer, and more vibrant every single day. These dedicated individuals serve as block captains, as unofficial coordinators of community clean-ups, concerts, festivals, and cookouts, as artists who bring beauty to neighborhood gateways, and as tireless advocates for the resources their communities need to truly thrive.

The Board and staff of BCF believe wholeheartedly that resident leadership is the foundation of stronger communities and meaningful, lasting impact. Through the Neighborhood Spotlight Awards, BCF celebrates the neighbors who take initiative and, in doing so, inspire others to take action and build a better Baltimore.

Spotlight Honoree: Angelo Solera

Angelo Solera was nominated for the Neighborhood Spotlight Award in 2023 and continues to be a driving force in Baltimore’s Latino community today.

Angelo Solera is the founder and executive director of Nuestras Raices Inc., which translates to “Our Roots,” a nonprofit organization he established in 2019. The organization is dedicated to educating, promoting, and preserving the richness and diversity of Hispanic and Latino culture and artistic heritage throughout the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Through diverse programming, educational initiatives, and broad community engagement efforts, Nuestras Raices Inc. has served as a powerful catalyst for social cohesion. The organization actively reconnects U.S.-born Hispanic and Latino children to their native culture while building meaningful bridges across different ethnicities, age groups, and communities.

Casa de la Cultura: A Historic Community Hub

In 2022, Nuestras Raices Inc. opened Casa de la Cultura, which translates to “House of Culture,” located at 3403 Gough Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21224. The center serves as a vibrant community hub that showcases and celebrates Hispanic art while empowering Hispanic children and youth to explore and express their creative imaginations.

Casa de la Cultura holds the distinction of being the first and only center of its kind in the entire state of Maryland. The center highlights local Latino artists, musicians, and performers through monthly gallery events and offers dance, visual art, and cultural workshops specifically designed for Latino youth. Classical guitar and Afro-Caribbean music classes are also available and open to the broader Baltimore community.

Fiesta Baltimore: Celebrating Latino Culture on a Grand Scale

Nuestras Raices Inc. also proudly hosts Fiesta Baltimore, widely recognized as the largest and most anticipated Latino cultural event in the Baltimore metropolitan region. The celebration includes an annual Latino cultural festival and the beloved Parade of Latino Nations, which draws thousands of visitors from across the region each year. Fiesta Baltimore stands as a testament to the power of culture, community, and collective pride in shaping the identity of Baltimore as a truly diverse and welcoming city.

Why the Neighborhood Spotlight Awards Matter

The Neighborhood Spotlight Awards shine a light on the community leaders who work every day without recognition or fanfare. By celebrating honorees like Angelo Solera, BCF reaffirms its commitment to investing in the people and organizations that uplift Baltimore neighborhoods from the ground up. These awards remind us all that meaningful change begins at the community level, led by neighbors who care deeply about where they live.
